Number of Universities and students learning software
Example Wuhan (on halfway between Beijing & HK highway and bullet-train) population 10 mln It had the largest number of enrolled college students in the world in 2011. 100 000 (87 000 in BJ)
Some people say India, but 25% of Indian cannot read (comparing to 5% in China)
In 2013 Chinese overtook Indian as most populous foreign students in USA.
It was far, it made language more distinct

In 200x Chinese quickly copied western ideas and businesses.
Those who did are now big companies, making that copying as part of searching for new products, while smaller companies have almost no chances. (For start-up to success key factor is connection with government, state-owned enterprises.)
There was East-West political standoff. Now it seems more like economical. (Though big money is always polictics)
Yes, but there reason is that because it was taught as part of SSH.
Do you know what is SSH? C/S, B/S, APP? All Chinese developers I met think those are English words. They state for Struts+Spring+Hibernate, Client-Server, Browser-server, i.e. web apps and apps.
So actually it is because it is taught in Universities. And once some do others would not teach other things. (Being different in China is not popular) 2 years ago, it was still about Spring 2.x Even now Spring 4.x is almost unknown.
- Groovy? Nobody.
- Cloud Foundry? Well, maybe heard because of some topics on events, but not so likely to use.
... because there is not docs in Chinese.
Google is almost absent in China. Search takes 5-10 seconds, opening page though google.com redirect takes 10-20s and often fails.
Everybody uses Baidu. For developer news there are
- csdn
- iteye
- Chinese version of infoQ (that surprisingly has different content)
