The Netzsch LFA 427 is used to measure the thermal diffusivity and contact resistance of solid and liquid materials through use of the laser flash method. The measured thermal diffusivity with the specific heat and density of the tested material are used to calculate the thermal conductivity.
From the Netzsch Website:
- Temperature range: room temp to 1575 °C (SiC furnace)
- Atmospheres: vacuum, inert (N2, He, Ar), oxidizing, reducing
- Sample Type: Ceramic, Glass, Metals, Melts / Liquids, Powders, Fibers and Multi-Layer Materials
- Sample Size: 10x10 mm square or 12.7 mm diam. circle, 0.1 mm to 6 mm thickness
- Sample Holders/Centering Cones: Al2O3 12.7 mm diam. circle, Al2O3 10x10 mm square, Al99.9 w/ lid 12.7 mm diam. circle (for waxes), stainless steel set for in-plane measuerments for highly conductive materials 20 - 25.4 mm diam. circle 1mm max. thickness
- Caps: Graphite, SSiC
- Measuring Range: Thermal diffusivity: 0.01 mm2/s to 1000 mm2/s, Thermal conductivity: 0.1 W/mK to 2000 W/mK
- Variable laser power and width
Measurement of bulk materials and thin films/coatings. The relative accuracy of the measurement was within 8.5% over the range of k values from 1.01 to 156 W m−1 K−1 (determined by comparison with reference materials). Temperature range: -196 to 350 C (with Linkam THMS 350EV-4 Thermal Vacuum Stage).

Measurement of thermal impedance in bulk materials (e.g., slabs, foams, and PCMs) under dynamic heating conditions. The noise level of the instrument is 0.01 °C/W. Frequency range: 100 µHz to 50 Hz (with a Keysight B2961A). Voltage range: up to 21 V. Heat flux range: up to 1.55 W/cm2 (with an Omega Heater KHLVA-101/10). Cold plate temperature range: 10 to 25 °C (with a PolyScience LS51M11A110C). Operating Temperature: up to 150 °C.
