Who We Are:

The PHAse Transformation Engineering (PHATE) Lab, under the direction of Dr. Patrick J. Shamberger, aims to address fundamental energy and information technology needs facing our society. We investigate the properties of matter that change state from one form to another, and develop materials design strategies to engineer these materials for high performance devices.

What We Do:

Our research areas focus on:

  • Phase Transformations,
  • Phase Change Materials and Composites,
  • Transient Thermal Systems,
  • Engineering Education.

These advances are used for:

  • Energy Storage,
  • Energy Conversion,
  • Intelligent Electronic Systems.

Our research group employs experimental techniques to explore materials structure and properties, and develops theory-driven analytical models and data-enabled materials design strategies to describe and design new materials. We work in close collaboration with computational scientists, both validating their models and using computational predictions to interpret experimental data.
