Voice recognition opportunities - orcasound/orcadata GitHub Wiki
Here is a list of (rare) bioacoustic bouts where the signals can confidently be associated with an individual whale, or at least a small number of whales that are isolated from their normal larger groups (e.g. a matriline or pod).
SRKWs
- 2007: Orca calf separated from its mother & brother (Beam Reach towed array data). See this mother-calf data archive.
- 2011: J1 repeating the S42 call while isolated
- 2024: L90 and newborn calf calling at Orcasound Lab in Haro Strait (there are likely more recordings one could request from Lime Kiln). See L90+calf bout in Orcasound biophony archive.
Bigg's KWs
- Has Indy ever been recorded while adventuring away from his matriline?
- Orca Behavior recording of Bigg's brothers?
Humpbacks
- Were any of the humpback bouts we've recorded associated with an individual (male? adult?)? To assess this will likely require cross-referencing retrospectively with HappyWhale or other individual ID databases...
- The closest we've come to associating individual humpback(s) with non-song vocalization?
Sperm whales
- Yukusam echolocating through Haro Strait (blog post | data archive, including recordings from Lime Kiln via SMRU)
