  • If you want to record a whole event (like a tournament) start here

Recording a whole tournament (or another event with multiple games)

:exclamation: If you are planning to record an official tournament, be sure to contact our moderators. We will provide any assistance we can and advertise your tournament with a site-wide banner, whenever possible.:exclamation:

If you are expecting to record several games and would like your viewers to quickly see and access any of them, it is necessary to first have a "group".

To create a new group simply use this link https://online-go.com/group/create or navigate to "Groups" page via the top navbar (or upper left menu icon) and click "Groups".

Navigate to your group page (easy access is from your profile) and click Create tournament record. Choose an appropriate tournament name and click OK

The tournament record page will look like this:

A: By clicking edit you can add description of any details about the tournament, your organization along with links to your webpage or anything useful (remember to click save when you are done). While in edit mode you can also remove any previously created rounds if necassary.

B: Here you can add all the players taking part in the tournament. Type a name, select rank from the dropdown menu and click add player.

C: Here you can add rounds of your tournament records (presumably you will need at least one). You can prepare more in advance, or add them over time. Just type an appropriate name into the text box and click Add round

Once you have created at least one round you will be presented with two options next to it.

Two options

A: Record game - This option will allow you to manually record the game move by move. In the pop-up type in a name of the game, select both players from the dropdown menus, choose rules and board size and click Create Demo. An empty board will load, ready for your input. For details on how to record games see Recording a single game below

B: Link game - This option will allow you to link a game already existing on OGS. Be it an uploaded .sgf, actual online game, or review. Just click the button and paste in the link from your recording.

Recording a single game

If you are not already on a blank demo board, navigate there by clicking the upper left OGS logo and selecting Demo Board. A pop-up box will appear where you can specify player names, rank, board-size and, ruleset. Click Create demo to be taken to a blank board awaiting your input.

The game record page will look like this:

A: This is your board. By clicking onto intersections (unless you have already selected a different tool) you will add black and white stones - naturally alternating colors.

B: These are player names and information on current captures and komi.

C: These are your game recording tools. They are explained in detail below.

D: This is a game tree. As you make moves they will appear here with respective numbers. If you create any variation branching from the main tree, it will be visible here.

E: This is move comments box, anything you type into this box will "stick" to the current move. Any spectator who then examines that particular move will see the comment attached to it.

F: In this box you (but mainly spectators) can name any variation they are currently on and share it with other viewers. It will appear as a clickable name in the chat.

G: This is a chat window. You and spectators can chat here, sharing their ideas and questions. In the lower right number you can see the number of current spectators.

Game recording tools

Clicking any of the icon will select the corresponding tool, which will then change the behaviour of a mouse click on the game board.

A: Places alternating stones - starting with black and changing the color after every click.

B: Places stones of only black color

C: Places stones of only white color

D: Allows you to simply draw all over the board with the selected color. Usefull for quickly highlighting areas of interest, territory, directions... Note that these markings are NOT linked to any move and will simply stay visible until deleted.

E: Allows you to delete ALL pen markings.

F: Allows you to choose a color of your pen. You can have pen marks of several colors on one board.

G: This button does not change the mouse-click behaviour, but stores a current branch into memory, allowing you to paste it somewhere else in the game tree.

H: This button does not change the mouse-click behaviour, but pastes the content of the memory into the current position (assuming there are no moves conflicting with the current board state).

I: This button does not change the mouse-click behaviour, but deletes the current move and all moves after that one on the current branch.

J: Marks an intersection (or a stone) with the nearest (unused) letter of the alphabet. Clicking onto an already existing letter will remove it.

K: Marks an intersection (or a stone) with the lowest (unused) number. Clicking onto an already existing number will remove it.

L: Marks an intersection (or a stone) with a triangle. Clicking onto an already existing triangle will remove it.

M: Marks an intersection (or a stone) with a square. Clicking onto an already existing square will remove it.

N: Marks an intersection (or a stone) with a circle. Clicking onto an already existing circle will remove it.

O: Marks an intersection (or a stone) with a cross. Clicking onto an already existing cross will remove it.

P: Creates a pass (no move on board, pass recorded in the tree, and alternate color), for the current player.

:exclamation: The board recording works even offline (on loss of connection) and will preserve your data, but make sure you are online before leaving the page, so it has a chance to synchronize. :exclamation:
