📢 New JupyterHub server - nthu-ioa/cluster GitHub Wiki

This is a copy of an announcement sent to the CICA cluster mailing list (02/26)

This is the first of a series of small announcements regarding the CICA cluster.

We have set up a JupyterHub server on the CICA cluster that can be accessed directly in a web browser, without having to go through the rather complex process of starting a slurm job and connecting to it over an SSH tunnel.

You might be familiar with this system from elsewhere (although ours is a rather basic version). This will hopefully make things easier for many people, especially new users.

Everyone is welcome to use the new system, as explained on our wiki: https://github.com/nthu-ioa/cluster/wiki/JupyterHub-Server

Please go to that page to find the address of the server!

It has been tested with a small group of users for a while, and is now relatively stable. However, we now need to test it in everyday use, potentially with many more users. We will probably need to make some adjustments based on feedback. If we need to reboot the server, we will announce this on the slack channel. Normally, news about the JupyterHub server will not be sent by email.

We really appreciate feedback. The best ways to give feedback and get help are described on the wiki page above (slack channel and github issues).

If you are unsure about anything, please don't hesitate to ask. However, please first check the wiki page FAQ section, ask others (e.g. experts in your group -- thank you to those experts!) and use the slack channel and/or github issues, before sending email to cica-admin about things to do with JupyterHub. Emails will inevitably get a slower response.

As explained on the wiki, you will always be able to go back to the "old" way of doing things if the new way doesn't meet your needs.

ps. Those who run jupyterlab sessions on fomalhaut should pay special attention to this message and the next one.
