Deployment Instructions

Step 1: Database Migration

# Backup production database first
pg_dump -h localhost -U postgres nchat > backup_$(date +%Y%m%d).sql

# Run migration
cd .backend/migrations
psql -h localhost -U postgres -d nchat -f 012_advanced_messaging_features.sql

# Verify tables
psql -h localhost -U postgres -d nchat -c "\dt nchat.nchat_message*"
psql -h localhost -U postgres -d nchat -c "\dt nchat.nchat_starred*"

# Verify triggers
psql -h localhost -U postgres -d nchat -c "SELECT * FROM pg_trigger WHERE tgname = 'message_edit_history_trigger';"

# Test helper functions
psql -h localhost -U postgres -d nchat -c "SELECT * FROM nchat.get_user_starred_messages('test-user-id', 10, 0);"

Step 2: Configure Hasura

  1. Open Hasura Console: http://api.localhost/console
  2. Track new tables:
    • nchat_message_edit_history
    • nchat_starred_message
    • nchat_message_read_receipt
    • nchat_thread_subscription
  3. Configure relationships:
    • message_edit_history.messagenchat_message
    • message_edit_history.usernchat_user
    • starred_message.messagenchat_message
    • starred_message.usernchat_user
    • Similar for read receipts
  4. Set permissions:
    • message_edit_history: Select by message owner or admins
    • starred_message: Users can only see their own
    • message_read_receipt: Message sender can see all, others see own
  5. Test GraphQL mutations in Hasura API Explorer

Step 3: Frontend Deployment

# Install dependencies
pnpm install

# Type check
pnpm type-check

# Lint
pnpm lint

# Run tests
pnpm test

# Build production
pnpm build

# Start production server
pnpm start

Step 4: Monitoring

  1. Sentry:

    • Verify error tracking for new mutations
    • Add custom context for advanced messaging errors
  2. Analytics:

    • Track events: message_edited, message_deleted, message_forwarded, message_pinned, message_starred
    • Monitor feature usage
  3. Database:

    • Monitor query performance on new indexes
    • Check table sizes for message_edit_history (may grow large)
    • Set up auto-vacuum for frequently updated tables
  4. Real-Time:

    • Monitor WebSocket connection count
    • Check subscription event throughput
    • Verify typing indicator cleanup (TTL)
