SASS / SCSS

Lead: William Hearn (GitHub: @sylus, Twitter: @william_hearn - Statistics Canada (Ottawa / Ontario)

Description: Evaluate how best SASS + Compass can be utilized in WET with a focus on the Grid System. While I admit to only being moderately proficient in this area it is my hope that I could get some more collaborators and possibly experienced designers to help out. I would love after this activity to have a solid battle plan for how a new grid system might work without the need for the many presentation classes that are currently employed. For people that are new to SASS I can provide a quick overview and explain what SASS is and why when combined with COMPASS it can help save you time and make your css far more reusable and organized. This event will be held next to the Drupal session as I am also participating in that activity as a lead. However I really want to move the yardstick on this so encourage people to voice their opinions and provide some advice. ^_^

Complex Data Table and Charts and Graph

Lead: Pierre Dubois (GitHub: @duboisp, Twitter: @duboi5p) - Industry Canada - Canadian Intellectual Property Office (Gatineau / Québec)

Description:

  • Zebra for Tables
  • How to use the grouping tag (colgroup, col, thead, tbody, tfoot)
  • How the charts and graph should handle complex data table.
  • jQuery Data Table Selector
  • jQuery Data Table Function
  • Complex Table Parsed Data
Bring Your Complex Table

You would need:

  • Have it in HTML format without any "scope", "id", "headers" attribute
  • To know the relationship between each tabular data and the associate header
I would help you:
  • To transform it in a comprehensible format
  • To set the HTML table structural element (thead, tbody, tfoot, colgroup, col)
  • If you realy need to simplify it !

Rapid Test-to-Design Process with Excel Spreadsheets

Lead: Lisa Fast (GitHub: @neoinsight Twitter: @neoinsight - E-mail: lisa (at) neoinsight.com) - Web Usability Specialist & Partner at Neo Insight (Ottawa)

Description: We'll walk through a process for fast iterative user-centred design and testing with WET and Excel spreadsheets. Once a WET home-page and mega-menus are created, a top-down approach enables us to front-end a WET site for usability testing, and quickly iterate through changes in the menu designs via Excel spreadsheets. We've used this approach successfully for several departments, collecting task-based input from hundreds of site users and producing a working WET mega-menu design and the spreadsheets to drive it to transition from development to production with high success rates for top tasks. The spreadsheet method also keeps and tests both languages together throughout the design process, increasing the speed and ease of implementation. Finally, the spreadsheets can also be used to drive a TreeJack test in Optimal Workshop - as described by Laura in the activity above. We'll explore how WET could be improved to better facilitate user and task-centred processes, particularly for Mobile usability testing.
