Team Overview

The Northern Bites are a RoboCup team composed of undergraduate students from Bowdoin College.

The Northern Bites began in 2005 as an honors project by Greydon Foil ('05). The team competed in the U.S. Open that year and did not score a goal, but did earn a 0-0 tie.

In 2006, the Northern Bites won their first match at the U.S. Open by defeating a team from Brown University. The 2006 team was also the first to compete at RoboCup, which was held in Bremen, Germany. The team made it to the final 16 with wins over Spelman (1-0) and TJ Ark (5-1) along the way.

In 2007 the Northern Bites won the world championship in Atlanta, GA by defeating the defending champs NUBots 5-1.

In 2008 the Northern Bites finished 3rd in the last four-legged league competition. The Bites' only loss came in a 0-0 game against eventual champion The German Team. The game went to penalty shots and the Bites lost 2-0. Also in 2008, the Bites competed in the initial Standard Platform League competition featuring humanoid robots. The Bites finished in the top 8 despite not having any functioning cameras on their robots.

In 2009 the Northern Bites finished 2nd in the Standard Platform League in Graz, Austria. The 14 goals the Northern Bites was second most in the tournament by a wide margin.

In 2010 the Northern Bites made the quarterfinals in Singapore, but lost to eventual 2nd place finisher rUNSWift.

In 2011 the Northern Bites made the round of 16, but failed to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since winning the tournament in 2007.

In 2012 the Northern Bites won their pool in Mexico City and made it to the round of 16, scoring an impressive 11 goals with only 9 goals against before being eliminated. This is the 7th year in a row the team has gone to the sweet 16.

In 2013, the Northern Bites finished 2nd at the US Open and in the top 8 at RoboCup 2013 in Eindhoven.

In 2014, the Northern Bites finished 3rd at the US Open.

In 2015, the Northern Bites finished 2nd at the US Open, and won 8th in the Drop-In Challenge in Hefei, China at RoboCup 2015.
