Overview

This week I made progress on the roof of the main building and the tree in the background. I added textures to the models and coloured each of them with their respective colours, using the colour picker to select colours from the original painting.

Modelling Progress :

Challenges

I think the biggest challenge this week was modelling the fine details of each model. Creating low poly models is not as challenging, but when it comes to making organic shapes that look somewhat realistic, I seemed to be having some difficulty. I spent a lot more time on the roof of the main building than I would have liked to, because I went through many different iterations. A lot of them did not look right, so I started from the beginning a few times. I still have yet to model some extra background props (background houses), but after one house is done I should be able to duplicate that and make minor modifications so they do not look identical.

Successes

My biggest success for this week was that I made any sort of progress at all. I've been feeling pretty burnt out lately, so I haven't had the motivation to continue working on things as much as I usually do, so I am glad that I still managed to move forward. My goal was to start UV mapping this week, but unfortunately I did not find the time to do so. However, I did find tutorials videos on how to export models from Maya into Substance painter, which is the step after UV mapping. I wanted to confirm that I had to UV map in Maya before putting the time and effort into it, (I wanted to know if I had to do UV maps in Maya or if Substance Painter did it for me) so this bit of research gave me the green light to go ahead with UV mapping.

Total hours spent this week: 7

Next steps

The next step is to finalize the fine details on each model, model the extra background houses, and begin UV mapping (for real this time). I hope that next week my focus can solely be on UV mapping, so that the week after I can focus on textures and learning Substance Painter.
