Purpose of the Document

The purpose of this document is to provide standards and guidelines for digitization, preservation and archiving of video records managed by Noolaham Foundation.

Audience

This document is intended for Management, Staff, Technology Team and RB.

Technical Challenges In Preserving Audio Records

As in any other media authenticity, quality, storage, record integrity, metadata, and software and hardware obsolescence are major technical challenges in creating, preserving and using video records. However, unlike other media, video is a very difficult and costly media to create, store, preserve and use. For example, “Uncompressed 1080i high-definition video recorded at 60 frames per second eats up 410 gigabytes per hour of video.” The technical challenges involved in transcoding and delivering video to end users is significant.

“Frame rate” refers to the number of frames displayed per second during playback. 30 frames for non films and 24 for films

Embedded Technical Metadata

Embedded Technical Metadata can be generated using open source software such as MediaInfo.
