Purpose of the Document

The purpose of this document is to provide standards and guidelines for photographing for archiving purposes. These guidelines apply to Noolaham Foundation projects that involve photographing or image collections.

Audience

This document is intended for Management, Staff, Technology Team and RB.

Archival Photographing

Textual objects such as manuscripts, artifacts, people, events etc can be photographed for archiving purposes. The goal of photographing for archival purposes is to capture images with authenticity, accuracy and quality. The archival digital images needs to have quality and related information such as color profiles to reproduce their

Equipment Needed

  • Professional quality SLR camera with 50mm lens and shutter release cable
  • Tripod or camera stand
  • Lighting: photo lights or photo tent/cube
  • Black, neutral gray or white backgrounds

Camera Settings

Setting Recommendation Comments Reasoning

Shutter Speed 1/25 If too dark, longer shutter speed may be needed.

White Balance Auto If saving images in RAW format, the white balance can be adjusted later.
