Bad Design - nolanhergert/notes GitHub Wiki

Doing justice to the bad designs I've seen over the years. Time to throw them away!

Velcro

While probably not a Velcro design, the hooks on the right are way too wide, causing the loops on the left to not catch very well, and eventually not at all!

Spatula

The adhesive eventually gave out from many dishwasherings (problem one). But the second problem is there's no internal mechanical bumps to further keep it in place. >.<

SD Card Mount

Using a micro sd card adapter, this design placed so much pressure on the unsupported center of the adapter that it soon broke! Way better to have a fully supported metal back to support the card, which is what they are using nowadays (including using a micro sd card slot).

Headlamp

Pivot point eventually broke from ???, but before that the pivot "catches" made out of plastic wore down too! It seems a lot better to just use a twist bolt pressure friction design like Gopros.

  • Using a magnet mount now oriented to the proper angle, which while fussy initially seems like the best solution.

Flashlight

Front screw doesn't work anymore, not sure why. Otherwise great AA battery design, although cheaper flashlights use 3XAAA which seems more robust longer term since it doesn't need to boost the voltage.

Earmuffs

Pivot point is not flexible and made out of plastic. Durrr. More current designs use a metal hinge type design with reinforced plastic around that area.

Nike belt

This Nike belt is about the worst design I've seen. Only a thin veneer of a black coating on top of ugly gray foam. It's like they want you to replace it with a new $30 belt as soon as possible...

  • Side note, I've since replaced this belt with a genuine leather belt that I made myself. Leather stores have belt material ready to go for <$10, and you can coat with black ink (maybe printer ink will work?), coat with a protector, punch some holes, and add the metal clasp. It works great, 3 years on.
