Old Journal Processor - njthomson/SrvSurvey GitHub Wiki

:construction: coming soon :construction:

SrvSurvey actively tracks journal entries as you play the game, but it won't naturally be aware of your activities and discoveries from before or if you forgot to start it. To make SrvSurvey aware of all your activities and discoveries - it is possible to retro-actively scan your old journal files.

image

  • To get started, open settings and click the button Scan old journal files, or use the bottom right menu from Codex Bingo.
  • Choose which cmdr and date to process from.
  • If you're not sure which date to use, click Set beginning of time to use the day before Elite Dangerous was first released.

Click Process journals to begin, and click again to make it stop. It will show you a few stats along the way, should you choose to keep watching.

FAQ

How long should it take?

Depending on how long you've been playing the game, it may take many minutes to run through. It took ~3 minutes to process ~2500 files for me, but this will vary greatly depending on your computer.

Is it safe to do this whilst playing the game?

Mostly. It depends on where and what you're up to in the game. The risk is that exploration activities in systems you're actively playing in may not be properly tracked. Unless you're actively exploring new systems or Guardian sites, it should be fine.

You can always run the tool again for just the last day to re-process anything that might have been missed.

How far back should I go? Does it handle pre-Odyssey journal files?

Ideally start at the beginning of time. The primary reason for this tool is to find all of your first discoveries. It will handle pre-Odyssey journal files, though it only cares about CodexEntry entries in those files. There is no harm if you do not scan your old files, the consequence will be that you may see ⚑ or ⚐ flags against organisms that you actually did discover long ago.

Should I use this if I started SrvSurvey after starting the game today?

Probably not. SrvSurvey will naturally reprocess journal entries from the last FSDJump forwards, across multiple files if needed. You should use this tool if you jumped through multiple systems before starting SrvSurvey.
