As of build 2.0.8.9 SrvSurvey has an interactive tool to help identify facilities in colonised systems. To launch the tool, from the giant Colonise button, hit Update system... and it will guide you through various in-game actions whilst actively monitoring journal files to extract as much data as possible. The process is by no means perfect but will at least save you needing to manually key in a bunch of station and body names.

To use this tool you must:

  • Have permission to update the system on Raven Colonial - ie: the system is Open or you are the architect

  • Have your Raven Colonial api-key set in SrvSurvey settings, tab: External Data

This tool can:

  • Identify the names of orbital ports
  • Identify the names and locations (parent body) of all other orbital and surface facilities
  • Determine the build-types of Odyssey settlements automatically upon docking

This tool cannot:

  • Identify the location (parent body) for orbital ports
  • Identify the specific build-types of installations, ports or hubs

System architects can look up build-types from the in-game demolish or cancel-construction UIs. See Identifying facility types below for tips if you are not the system architect.

The identification process

The tool starts by generating fresh journal entries, asking you to fully FSS the system and/or scan the Nav beacon. It will proceed automatically once it detects these.

Next it runs through the following phases to identify facility names and locations by setting them as your ship destination. This is done in the left Nav panel or the system map. The tool window will update as you progress.

Note: the game does not update journal files when clearing a target destination. To re-target something you must actively select something else and then re-target the location again.

The phases identify the names and locations of:

  1. Orbital Installations

    Most names will be known upfront, but should they be remote they may not show in the left Nav panel. Use the system-map target any that remain in this case. Items will be removed from the list as they are targeted and the tool will move to the next phase automatically once locations are known.

    Note: The game links some installations with invalid body IDs - these cannot be matched automatically.

  2. Orbital Ports

    Most of these names will be known ahead of time. Like installations, target them in the system-map if not listed in the left Nav panel.

  3. Surface Facilities

    These names will not be known ahead of time, but you will see them appear in the tool as you progress. Hit Next once you are confident you have targeted all of them.

Final edits and saving

At this point all facilities will be listed in the tool and you are free to update any names, build-types or locations. Hit Submit to push data to Raven Colonial, or you may hit Reload at any point to start over.

Identifying facility types

Odyssey settlements

SrvSurvey can identify Odyssey settlements automatically when docking by triangulating the location and rotation of landing pads relative the settlement origin. This can be done with the tool window open or it will detect if you have docked previously with SrvSurvey running.

If you do not wish to dock at each and every Odyssey settlement, some can be identified by + signs and landing pad sizes. See the table below for more details.

Surface outposts and ports

Whilst not yet supported, it may be possible to identify dockable surface ports using the same technique as Odyssey settlements in future builds.

Surface Hubs

Identifying surface hubs is tricky as they cannot be docked at and will start shooting if you approach too close. We can use the economy listed in the left Nav panel to identify their build group, which is enough detail for the sake of modeling the system. A visual comparison will be needed to identify the specific build type. You can confirm they are hubs by Has appropriate landing pads: Docking offline:
