Installing the Visio Plug-in

GunnShow is a plug-in package to MS Visio. To use GunnShow, you must have it installed in your Visio application.

To install it, you must have admin privilege in Windows. Starting with GUNNS release v17.1, we maintain 4 versions of the installer:

  • gunns/gunnshow/GunnShow/GunnShowSetup/GunnShowSetup64_vXX.X.X.msi: 64-bit installer for Visio 2016
  • gunns/gunnshow/GunnShow/GunnShowSetup/GunnShowSetup32_vXX.X.X.msi: 32-bit installer for Visio 2016
  • gunns/gunnshow/GunnShow/GunnShowSetup/backwards_compatibility/GunnShowSetup64_vXX.X.Xb.msi: 64-bit installer for Visio 2013 and prior
  • gunns/gunnshow/GunnShow/GunnShowSetup/backwards_compatibility/GunnShowSetup32_vXX.X.Xb.msi: 32-bit installer for Visio 2013 and prior

You’ll want to use the appropriate installer that is compatible with your Visio version. More notes on that below.

Installation Procedure:

  • First, un-install the previous version of GunnShow, if you had one. If you don’t do this, you’ll keep getting the old version’s behavior even after installing the new version.
    • Use Windows Add/Remove Programs to un-install the previous version.
  • Copy the appropriate installer .msi from the list above into your Windows file system.
  • Double-click on the .msi in Windows to install the new version, and it should self-install and register with Visio. The .msi is the installer file. It should also install some files into C:\Program Files\NASA\GunnShow, so check that folder gets created with some files in it when you install. In Visio, check the active state of the plug-in by selecting File > Options > Add-Ins. The GunnShow should appear under “Active Application Add-ins”, as highlighted below:

64- vs. 32-bit Office

The .msi file in the gunns/gunnshow/ repo is for 64-bit MS Office. If your MS Office is 32-bit, then you must use a .msi built specifically for 32-bit. Contact us if you need such a build. You can find out the bit-age of your Office by opening up MS Word, and selecting File > Help. In the “About Microsoft Word” section on the right, you’ll see either a 32- or 64-bit version, as highlighted below:

We think that Visio re-uses some libraries from MS Office, so even if your Visio is 64-bit, if your Office is 32-bit then you need to use the 32-bit .msi installer.

When GunnShow is successfully installed, then when you start Visio you should see the GunnShow tab in its menu tabs. Then you can continue on with your First-time User Setup.
