Curtobacterium is a genus of short, yellow- or orange-pigmented, Gram-positive, rod-shaped bacteria. They are typically isolated from plants, and C. flaccumfaciens in particular is a well-established plant pathogen (Collins 1983). There have however been reports of clinically-relevant strains identified in humans (Funke 2005)(Francis 2011).
Some species grow better at 30°C than 37°C, however others grow equally as well at either temperature – isolates of C. flaccumfaciens identified in humans are an example of the latter. They are catalase-positive, urease-negative, and capable of aesculin hydrolysis. Over 75% of cellular fatty acids are C15:0αi and C17:0αi (Funke 2005).
It appears that Curtobacterium is rarely identified in clinical samples, and that its pathogenicity is considered low, given that humans likely come into contact with this bacteria every day (Funke 2005).
