Business Model - mtransitapps/mtransit-for-android GitHub Wiki

1st draft of what a business model will look like

Key Partners

  • Local transit agencies users (in exchange for rewards) to fact check the app, make sure it stays relevant, up-to-date and provide as much information as possible in an non-overwhelming way to these transit agency users.
  • Transit agencies (?)
  • Transit data providers (??)

Keys Activities

  • Developing a mobile app extracting transit agencies information and showing it in a non-overwhelming user interface.
  • We don't have a back-end because we have no added-value to give users: we find useful information from various sources and try to make sense of them to best inform public transit users.
  • App is on Android only for now (3 Billions users worldwide, especially popular among public transit users). We'll develop for other mobile platforms once we can pay people to do it.

Keys Resources

  • Software developer(s)
  • Time
  • (no server)

Cost Structure

  • Software developers salary
  • Local transit agencies users rewards
  • (no server)

Value Propositions

  • Providing the most complete transit app by integrating all the sources of information available (adapting our app to the wide variety of transit app data sources available) in a predictable non-overwhelming user interface (finding the right spot between not enough information and too much information).
  • More and better transit information means spending less time waiting and not missing an important meeting because you know in advance if the bus/subway/train has been cancelled/relocated/delayed.

Customer Relationships

  • Listen to users feedback, always reply to their messages and comments.
  • Ask local transit agencies users for their help fact checking the app and keeping it relevant in exchange for rewards.
  • Ask users for social activity (follow, share...) in exchange of ad-free period.

Channels

  • Mobile app stores (Google Play now, Amazon and/or Apple later).
  • Mobile ads on AdMob and Audience Network targeting frequent transit users on their mobile devices (Android phones for now).
  • Transit agencies apps listing on app stores with screenshots and video showing how MonTransit will help them when they use this transit agency services.

Customer Segments

  • The first customers segments are frequent transit agencies users ("every day" or "multiple times a week").
  • After better integrating transit directions in the app, target non-frequent transit agencies users who mostly use transit directions because they don't know the transit agency services.

Revenue Streams

  • Most transit users will not pay to use a transit app because official transit agencies app as well as Google Maps & Google Now/Assistant are free.
  • Revenues will mostly come from ads with few users paying weekly/monthly/yearly subscriptions to support their favorite transit app and remove ads from the user interface.
  • Banner ads are not taking too much space on current mobile devices because they have big screens.
  • The app heavily relies on location (distance, compass, map) to show information so native advertising might be interesting (example: local stores in the list and maps).
