Making a versatile portal is very similar to making a vanilla nether portal. The frame is made of Portal Frame blocks, arranged in the same way as a vanilla nether portal. The frame must include 1 and only 1 Portal Controller to be valid. If a frame is invalid, it will stay gray. If a frame is valid, it will be the color set in the portal controller. The frame may be as few as 3 blocks wide and 4 blocks tall, or as wide and tall as 23 blocks. Portal Sizes

Portals are lit by using a Portal Lighter on the interior of a valid portal frame, similar to using a Flint and Steel on a nether portal frame.
