The current persistence infrastructure for jBPM/Drools has become spaghetti code -- albeit highly functional -- because of it's essentially an artifact from the 4.x branch.
However, it's reaching the point at which changes to the existing infrastructure are increasingly risky because the code is increasingly complex.
Furthermore, the existing code actually keeps us from fixing some issues.
Refactor the persistence infrastructure while keeping as much as possible of the existing code.
