Baldur's Gate 3 - montchr/c-games GitHub Wiki

(work in progress, no this list is not exhaustive, in fact most of the things i would include here are not yet here, and if it's oddly limited that's only because i just started adding to it)

TODO: make this into a real wiki static site

My Characters

  • TODO: A script/tool/something to compile character info from game and export as structured data which can then be converted to a Markdown table

I always tend to gravitate towards a boring True Neutral -- even with Xar, who should be pretty evil.

Taer / Taere [Complete, pre-Epilogue]

Half-elf, Bard (College of Swords)

Taere changed their name from Taer after falling madly in love with Karlach. The "e" stands for "Excellent!" They also felt that their parents named them Taer out of laziness, as it's short and is not far off from "Tav", which is everyone's default name before their parents (me and Larian) give them a real name. Clearly, they inherited the "name-lazy" trait from their parents -- adding another "e" on the end isn't much of a name change. Fortunately there's no real overarching legal system in Faerun so name changes are cheap.

Definitely a bit of a trickster. Although they downplay it, Taere is also kind of a killer. Not a Dark Urge, and they don't even really like killing, but it just kinda... happens. Oops! There goes another...

Responsible for the deaths of both Jaheria (indirectly, at Moonrise, accepted with a shrug) and Minsc (directly, struck the killing blow, but regrets it endlessly). Taere also killed Minthara without so much as a word between them.

Still roaming Avernus with Karlach to this day. Became a chain-smoker of those fine cigars Karlach carries around (K has an endless supply, smoking is mandatory in Avernus and provided as a complimentary supply regardless of standing).

Xar Kriacnor [In Progress]

Playtime: ~256 hours

The Dark Urge, Lolth-Sworn Drow, Sorcerer (and, temporarily also a Level 2 Paladin multiclass because he was so inspired by Minthara).

Lived as a hermit in the Underdark for a while, but that must have been a while ago because he doesn't remember anything after that. He knows, at least, that he was a lot younger then.

Definitely not Lolth-sworn anymore. He is kind of a social outcast and "nice guy" -- but "nice guy" in drow society basically means sociopath who is good at charming people.

Think Hannibal Lector as portrayed by Mads Mikkelsen. TODO: side-by-side face comparison, there might actually be a resemblance

Name is from combining first/last names from a list of drow names.

Accidentally killed Gale, and he still carries around Gale's hand. Cannot bear to part with it, even for the murder tribunal.

He was in a brief relationship with Lae'zel. She was head over heels for him. He didn't really care, but played along... until Minthara unexpectedly re-appeared at Moonrise Towers.

Minthara thinks he raided the grove with her, but that's only because of a weird bug haunting my playthrough. In reality, he chickened out after telling her where to find the grove, fleeing into the Underdark and getting high on a bunch of mycellia. Headcanon says Minthara is misremembering events because of her brainwashing, but Xar just goes along with it in order to impress her because he is, yes, a total asshole sociopath. But so is Minthara, in a different (more honest) way, and that's why he actually genuinely adores her. Adoration is an unfamilar feeling to Xar due to his... background. His relationship with Minthara is surprising to him especially because she is the first person he would try his hardest to keep safe from The Dark Urge. Also, she would probably kill him easily if he tried anything.

Because of Xar's cowardice in bailing on Minthara after fleeing to the Underdark, he never spent that night with her... even though she remembers it vividly...

It is definitely a weird and frustrating bug.

Xar voluntarily leaned real hard into killing Isobel without hesitation. And somehow Jaheria never found out. He appreciates his companions for keeping things hush hush.

And, actually, while he feels kinda lukewarm and a little distrustful of Jaheria, he has a lot of respect for her, especially after she confronted him that one night. He helped save Minsc from Minsc, and after Minsc joined up with the party, Xar became noticeably more lighthearted. He is fond of Boo. And Minsc.

Xar is kind of a space cadet sometimes. His favorite expression of amazement is "RHIZOMATIC!" which he only picked up, weirdly enough, after spending a lot of time in the Grotto.

Wyll Ravengard [In Progress, Honour Mode]

Who the hell is this guy?

Wyll understates the degree to which his immediate attraction to Karlach influenced his decision to spare her life. According to one of Duke Ravengard's journals found by Xar, Wyll has always been a bit of a ladies' man (from his own perspective, at least). Though Wyll's father sees it as pure folly -- Wyll has fallen literally head over heels for "beautiful women" since that time he dove into Grey Harbour after "a mermaid" and had to be rescued by his father. And so Karlach is Wyll's current mermaid. Also, in case it wasn't obvious, Wyll is smooth AF. He doesn't so much "flirt" as he does "slide".

Wyll is not a fan of the gith, as they are well-known for their ruthless crimes against Faerunity. In Wyll's words: "the Defender of the People will not abide such monstrosities". He refused to help Lae'zel out of the cage to give her "a taste of her own githly medicine" -- "karma" for Lae'zel's outright misanthropic and uncaring attitude towards saving Shart on the nautiloid.

As many human children are wont to... be... Wyll used to be pretty racist against goblins while growing up quite comfortably in human-centric Baldur's Gate under the wing of his father, but after joining a wild goblin drinking game on a dare from "friends" (read: less-fortunate kids who take advantage of Wyll's gullibility) on his coming-of-age birthday party (TODO: how old is this?) at the "Mermaid Bar" (as he has always called TKTKTKTK since he first saw it in a delirious half-drowned state after his father rescued him from Grey Harbour on a doubly-mermaid-filled day when he was a child) and drunkenly sleeping with a beguiling goblin huntress, has since turned his attention to hating on fiends instead.

TODO: when did Wyll pact with Mizora? before or after his unforgettable-despite-wasted goblin one-night-stand?

Due to a mixup at Waukeen's Rest, while Wyll and Karlach were trying to save others trapped inside the inn, Shadowheart totally blew off Councillor Florrick and Wyll is kinda pissed about that. Wyll hopes that Florrick doesn't hold it against him, and hopes even more that this stupid interference from Shartheart doesn't drive him and his father even fuuuuurther apart (though how much further apart could they be?). Regardless, Wyll is definitely going to prioritize saving his father. When he found out about this, he started running to the west with Shart and Astarion to catch up with Florrick while Karlach continued the search for survivors. But they were alerted by a roguish tiefling to the presence of the githyanki by the Mountain Pass junction. On Astarion's advice, Wyll reluctantly turned back to the burning inn to regroup with Karlach (who, in the meantime, had found a single survivor mourning the death of his wife, mentioning something about a missing dowry). While Wyll noticed Lae'zel speaking with the dragonrider gith, he wisely surmised that she would not be too willing to help them get past the gith terrorists, and so turned the other way. He also straight up just does not like Lae'zel, and is unlikely to team up with her despite their shared affliction and her potential usefulness and obvious earnestness.

Wyll found Minthara slightly odd and interesting. It seems likely that if she found out the true nature of the Absolute, she, an obviously strong-willed person who has seen some shit in life, would be pretty fucking pissed and want nothing to do with being controlled by any brain that is not her own. Perhaps she, like Wyll's father, was abducted against her will by the cult? Shit, doesn't that mean that my dad is probably on his way to getting 'poled? But overall Minthara is obviously a terrible person willing to do terrible things -- the tadpole can't change a person that dramatically, right? After learning about his father's fate at Waukeen's Rest, however, Wyll is gunning pretty hard for Minthara's head... though he's still not sure whether he'd rather kill her or try to extract more information from her... maybe she knows more about his father's whereabouts at Moonrise? If only Mizora hadn't just reminded Wyll that his contract says nothing about "only killing monsters", because Minthara is clearly a monster of a person, even if it's not entirely her fault. Maybe, just maybe, she could be convinced to help them if they told her the truth about her condition... we shall see...

Lorne Lorgan

Died twice in Honour Mode. Will probably be resurrected, if only for the combination of idiotic name and idiotic Oath of Devotion paladin.

Dragonborn, Oath of Devotion.

Might or might not be Durge, depends on his incarnation.

Created mainly as a post-patch-5 test of Honor Mode and BG3MM (after switching from Vortex). But I also still want to try my hand at playing an Oath of Devotion Paladin without breaking oath, which, from my understanding, is kind of challenging.

Windows is barely usable and I cannot type or run scripts efficiently on this platform currently, so this will need to be compiled elsewhere. Probably something like using jq to process some combination of BG3MM manifests and NexusMods download info (apparently they have an API but I would not be surprised if it's garbage).

Mods to Evaluate

These mods look interesting, but don't currently make sense in any of my current playthroughs. That's likely because they affect character creation only, or they add spells/items/armour.

Again, because typing on Windows is extremely error-prone for me (I usually type in Emacs on Linux or macOS), I am only going to paste links. Nice formatting can come later.

Modder Resources

I have never created a mod, but if I were to create a mod, I might want to use some of these resources discovered prior.

Essential Tools

  • Norbyte/lslib -- "Tools for manipulating Divinity Original Sin and Baldur's Gate 3 files"
  • ShinyHobo/BG3-Modders-Multitool -- "Utility for quickly generating Baldur's Gate 3 mod packs from an unpacked workspace (among other things)"
  • Norbyte/bg3se -- Add Lua/Osiris scripting support to the game. Not strictly necessary, but it handles the job of the still necessary Mod Fixer without needing to install yet another thing. Also, telling players to use BG3SE seems like a great way to avoid the ubiquitous "Mod Fixer is unnecessary" or "Mod Fixer broke my game!" complaints entirely.

Utility Mods

  • Color-Channel Identification Dyes: "There are fifteen color channels available to armor pieces and articles of clothing, which basically divide neatly into five groups of three. Each of these five dyes provides a high-saturation color to each of a given grouping's three color channels (Primary: Red, Secondary: Green, Tertiary: Blue)."
  • Tutorial Chest Summoning: Primarily used in-game for mods to provide players with access to custom items, but may also be useful for testing.
