Known Alt Roots - moderntld/www.modernnic.net GitHub Wiki

This is an informative list of the Alternative DNS Roots we are aware of and respect at this time. Currently, ModernNIC will never establish top-level-domains that conflict with an alternative DNS root on this list. This list does not include ICANN, see this page for information on their namespaces.

If you operate an alt-root and would like to be added to this list, please reach out to us on IRC or our Mailing List. Of note: simply because an alt-root was added to this list does not mean ModernNIC peers with their domains. We simply respect the claims they've made and will not conflict with them, and respectfully ask they do the same. If an alt-root creates a namespace (TLD) that conflicts with a zone ModernNIC offers, we cannot guarantee future compatibility with said alt-root and they will be removed from this list.

For a list of alt-roots we currently peer with, see Peered Roots.

Alt-roots we respect

CoreNIC

Main Article: CoreNIC

CoreNIC is an Alternative DNS Root operated by "TOWER Development" offering the .core and .startup namespaces.

DNSEEK

DNSEEK is "a partially non-profit and free platform that found [sic] to aim creating a innovated vision to domain name system in the internet." DNSEEK is based in Turkey, and provides access to ICANN domains as well as a multitude of unique new domains. They currently offer .123 .888 .dinle .dom .fy .izle .listen .oku .oyna .sat .vr .www.

Emercoin

Emercoin provides the top level domains .coin, .emc, .lib, and .bazar via a blockchain-based DNS resolution service. Namespace resolution is also provided by OpenNIC.

FurNIC

FurNIC aims to bring a unique identity to Furries, Furry Fandom, and other Anthropomorphic interest websites across the internet. FurNIC and OpenNIC work closely, with .fur (FurNIC's TLD) generally being treated as part of OpenNIC for most purposes, rather than a separate peer entity. For this reason, ModernNIC peers with FurNIC (via OpenNIC).

Namecoin

Namecoin supports the alternative top-level domain .bit. The alternative domain .bit is resolved by any computer running a namecoin full node and bridging software such as, nmcontrol, ncdns, and the freespeechme browser plugin. A centralized server which bridges DNS and Namecoin can also be used, meaning that users who use the centralized server do not benefit from Namecoin's decentralized and secure nature. Alternatively, its resolution is also provided by OpenNIC, and therefore ModernNIC

New Nations

New Nations provides domains to nation-states that aren't listed in the ISO 3166-1 standard and therefore do not have their own ccTLD delegated to them. For example: .ko (Kosovo), .ku (Kurdish people), .te (Tamil Eelam), .ti (Tibet), and .uu (Uyghur people). Domain name resolution is provided by a peering agreement with OpenNIC (and therefore ModernNIC) or New Nations' own DNS resolvers.

OpenNIC

Main article: OpenNIC

OpenNIC (also referred to as the OpenNIC Project) is a user owned and controlled top-level Network Information Center that offers a non-national alternative to traditional Top-Level Domain (TLD) registries such as ICANN. OpenNIC provides a multitude of TLDs that are listed here.

Alt-Roots we do not respect

Of note: "we do not respect" is a misleading term, some of these projects we highly appreciate. We simply cannot guarantee mutual compatibility (non-conflicting zones) with the alt-roots below for various reasons.

FreeNIC

FreeNIC is a decentralized "proof of concept" DNS project created as an alternative to InterNIC. They currently provide angel fem gris nic smart quoque radio silicon.

  • Regrettably, we cannot respect FreeNIC's domain claims as they have no central authority for checking domains, etc., and therefore we cannot guarantee mutual compatibility: "Everything is up for grabs on FreeNIC, including .com and .net." -- Angelica (FreeNIC founder) via the OpenNIC IRC channel.
