Beginners Guide: Terminology - mn7216/VocaDBstuff GitHub Wiki

Are you confused by some of the terms being used in the community? Here's a quick guide to help you understand some of the most common ones:

Vocalost:

Is an abbreviation of and refers to "Vocaloid Lost Media". Generally, this term is extended to other vocal synths like UTAU as well. This also doesn't mean only lost music, it can refer to, for example, voicebanks or merchandise as well!

Reprint:

A reprint is an upload of a song by someone other than the original producer. One of the main ways of finding lost songs is finding reprints of them. We also create our own reprints for archival purposes.

Vocarank:

Vocaranks (abbreviation of Vocaloid Rankings) were rankings of Vocaloid songs posted on NND. These generally range from about early-mid 2007 to late 2013, but that'll depend on the type of Vocarank you're looking at. They're useful to us because they often contain the only existing clips of some songs, making them a good starting point and reference for the actual song if you come across it. Unfortunately, they usually only have around 5-10 seconds of a given song. More in-depth description on their resources page.

VocaDB

Refers to the Vocaloid Database, a website that's essentially a giant wiki for over 500,000 vocaloid songs. More on their resources page.

NND

Stands for Nico Nico Douga, basically the Japanese equivalent of YouTube. This is where a lot of lost songs were originally posted. NND videos will have a code in their URL that starts with "sm" (most videos) or "nm" (for videos created with NicoNico Movie Maker). The sm/nm ID is very important since having it allows us to use the rest of the resources we have. Without the ID, we can't use most of our other resources.

Nicolog

Website that logs videos and users on NicoNico Douga. Useful for finding out a lot of info about a song.

Nicopedia/DIC

Website that functions as a wiki (in Japanese) for some producers and songs. It automatically embeds songs, which is very useful for us, as it can give us information like a song's title, length, and date posted.

Openlists

Openlists are NND's equivalent to playlists (collections of videos grouped together by a user).
