Module 02 Assignment

Assignment 02 is an introduction to Tableau Desktop utilizing the class dataset hosted on class server The assignment has two parts:

  1. Familiarize yourself with the Tableau blogs linked below. Build the data model and the two calculations on both fact tables
  2. Review the Advanced Tableau Dashboard, the blogs below, and write a paper about a. What you learned? b. What questions you will have for the guest speaker (Mary) expert in Tableau? c. Difference between Power BI and Tableau?

This activity will take you about 3 to 4 hours, so plan accordingly! VISIT AT LEAST ONE BLOG BELOW (WRITE ABOUT BLOG WITH TEACHNICAL WRITE UP) 20 POINTS I have included some of my favorite blogs for getting ideas on how to visualize data and push the limits on what I think Tableau can do. • Fivethirtheight.com is a politics and culture blog. IMO, it’s the best at bushing the envelop on what visualizations and dashboards should be without doing so for its own sake. I also like the branding. • StoryTellingWithData.com is a blog with a lot of useful posts for branding and building visuals that are clear and use the space and colors within a chart wisely. There are also some tutorials, so you can learn how to do some of the things it recommends. • flerlagetwins.com This blog is owned by two Tableau Zen masters. Its branded more like a corporate site, so fewer primary colors but professional. It also tackles practical problems in its blog and includes some tutorials. • InformationisBeautiful.net Interesting visuals, very colorful but you cannot download the workbooks and there are no tutorials.

Step 3: Pull Tables into Data Source.

  1. Drag and drop the vw_Fact_Covid_2023 view from the left into the white space. We wll also drag and drop Dim Country onto the sheet. You will get an error message right away. To fix the error message you will have to connect the datasets correctly. DimCounty Country goes with FactCovid2023 Country Region Fact Covid with Dim Country

You will need this data model built as follows. In the next two assignments we will update the model.

CALCULATION COUNTS 30 POINTS TWO SHEETS You will need the calculation counts for each of the Fact Tables by State. All I want to see is you can count the table. We will be updating these measures over the next two assignments

Export Packaged Workbook. You will fail the assignment if you don’t do this part.

SUBMIT A FILE TO THE CANVAS SITE After you have created your updated Assignment02YourFnameLname, place them into one folder and ZIP that folder. Then upload the resulting ZIP file to the Canvas web site. TECHNICAL WRITE UP GITHUB 20 POINTS You should put your write up in your GitHub Wiki.
