It's one of the big rivers in this land (the one on the West side). That's where the "great" comes from. It also erodes a good deal of black volcanic stone in its upper lengths, which turns the water blackish seasonally when floods mix the black silt that has accumulated in the mountain lakes. That's where the "dark" comes from. The "river" part is self-explanatory. It's widely known that the river has been called the Great Dark River forever, but it's widely suspected that hasn't always been true. Naturally, many look to the Tiefling Time Wizards, and imagine the addition of "great" was meant to make it sound better than That Other River.
