Frugal-IoT simple scenarios
This is a quick overview of the kind of scenarios we imagine the sensors being used in.
Some simple scenarios
Professional greenhouse - power in some places (office) but not where sensors needed
* WiFi/GSM gateway (good one) or WiFi to other internet on site
* So could possibly Mains or PoE to WiFi gateway
* Sensors from small solar+battery
Low income greenhouse - no power or WiFi, maybe cellular access dependent on where position
* WiFi/GSM gateway (mid scale) solar powered
* Small sensors, own solar
Open field farming - e.g. urban agriculture
* Small sensors (soil), maybe reasonably dense
* Controlled (small) irrigation pumps (solar)
* Single WiFi/GSM gateway - either own solar, or mains or PoE from nearby mains.
Solar drier - (hot air, using temperature/humidity controlled fan)
* No power closely
* Typically Single Solar powered sensor, or maybe a few in adjacent driers
* Solar powered, switched fan
* May not have backhaul for data or Solar powered pocket WiFi/GSM router.
Ocean measurement
* Floating device (anchor to bottom) or attached to pole
* Measuring salinity & PH
* Solar powered
* Probably store data locally and pick up SIM cards
Building energy optimisation
* Various sizes of building complex
* Use building’s wifi (maybe, though could be complex if tenanted in which case LoRaWan might be better
* Can get power (USB socket) to sensors/actuators
Storage management
* Three typical setups - a: shipping containers outside; b: shipping containers in basic warehouse/under roof; c: warehouse with rooms.
* Small solar powered sensors if outdoors
* If indoors (containers or rooms in warehouse) run power between containers - could be mains or PoE
* Building’s WiFi - though may have issues with penetrating metal of containers and need repeater or wired WiFi routers
Pile of agriculture stuff
* Warehouse with pile of something in it - e.g. Cacao beans, seaweed drying etc
* May have power, maybe not.
* WiFi/GSM gateway solar powered or building mains
* Multiple individual distributed sensors - maybe can solar power them (through roof) or maybe swappable battery packs.
Well depth
* Water wells (e.g. infiltration wells, or rainwater tanks)
* Pressure sensors at bottom of wells, dev board at surface.
* Solar powered dev board
* Possibly attached to nearby building’s WiFi though may need solar powered WiFi extender.
* Or remote using WiFi/GSM gateway or GSM dev board
