Overview
Based on FreeBSD (an open-source Unix-like OS), pfSense is one of the most commonly used networking operating system. This can be attributed to its open-source format and easy to understand web interface. At a size of just 1GB and free of cost, pfSense is the powerhouse for most minimal networking systems. Don't let its size fool you, it has a long list of available firewall, VPN, and intrusion prevention features. (A list of applications and services can be found at this link). On top of its widely available features, pfSense has extensive documentation easily accessible to anyone.
Overall, pfSense is the perfect operating system for network beginners and professionals. It's packed with features, documentation, and useful tools that can fit any small network requirements. Below, I will dive deeper into pfSense's best features as well as any shortcomings I have found during my research and testing. Following that section will be my steps for installation and configuration on a new system. Finally, I will list my scripts, their uses, how to use them, and download links.
