Update from Bertrand on PREMIS and OWL
- Team of 8-10, with help from Rob Sanderson and Esme Cowles, reviewed previous ontology for two months, with the goal to bring it into compliance with PREMIS 3.0. However, upon analysis they decided to make a deeper revision to make it more RDF-friendly. They defined general principles which will affect the ontology revision. Previously, the ontology reflected the structure of the data dictionary, close to the XML schema implementation. New version will be adapted to the spirit of RDF, reusing as many classes and properties from existing (external) ontologies as possible (e.g., FOAF, PROV-O). The previous ontology is seen as too complex; the revision will be simpler, e.g., dropping cardinality.
- Karin distributed access to the working document in an email to the METS Board on 2/11/2016.
- Rights are being considered out of scope, whereas PREMIS devotes significant space to rights. That’s one of the issues that has not been fully discussed yet.
- Many of the referenced ontologies themselves reference any number of other ontologies, which doesn’t necessarily equate with simplicity. Not clear what makes an ontology easy to use, which depend on perspective. Using one standard on its own may look different from trying to make use of the data in a larger context.
- Are there any action items for METS Board?
- Is there a tie-in to the Board’s current work of documenting profiles in Google spreadsheet?
Hydra-in-a-box data modeling / PCDM update
- Should the METS Board have a relationship with HIAB/PCDM? Yes, but how, given timing and scope of the data modeling team’s work? The HIAB focus is linked data, so METS is a significant factor. (BC may be earlier adopters of HIAB.) The Board needs a volunteer to monitor/participate in the HIAB data modelling group’s open calls, or Betsy will ask Christine Mayo to step in and report to us. Brian will report on Stanford’s LDCX meeting.
- Do Europeans care about HIAB? Not on their radar yet.
METS Profile evaluation (Google sheet) project
- This will remain on the agenda until we get it done. Anyone who is unable to participate should let Tom know. Recruitment
- There are 2 open spots. There is a possible replacement from the British Library for one of the positions. At the next call, the Board can consider nominations and/or plan to solicit nominations.
