Updating a Site Within WordPress Engine - mergeweb/docs GitHub Wiki

If you are launching or updating a site within Wordpress Engine, follow these steps:

  • Make a backup of current site and new site
  • Make a zip file of current site's latest backup. (More info here)

**** Make an Archive site (transferable site):

  • Make new instance in Wordpress Engine of the current site as a transferable site. This will allow full access, but is free and will not be billable.

  • Select "Copy from an existing environment"
  • Select current PRD site.

**** Replace STG environment in current site, and replace with new site

  • If old STG and DEV environments exist, delete.
  • Make new instance of STG in current site.
  • IMPORTANT: Select "Copy from an existing environment" and select the new site

**** Copy STG env to PRD site

  • Navigate to the (new) STG dashboard in the current site environment
  • Select "Copy environment"
  • Copy everything, database, and all.

  • During the copy process, the production homepage will redirect to the staging site until the copy has been complete.

**** Tie up loose ends

  • Change Site Title and Tagline of (updated) production site. Be sure to have the old site title and tagline as a reference.
  • Admin Email Address should be [email protected] (or whatever is the current dev or support email).
