How Hospitals Work - medicaltransparency/medicaltransparency.github.io GitHub Wiki

Goal: Illuminate how hospitals work in an easy to understand, interactive manner

Motivation: Patients often have little concept of how the hospital works, leading to dissatisfaction with:

  • the wait times experienced
  • the number of people who come to see them
  • why it seems like people keep coming to ask them the same questions (and it seems like no one is talking to each other)

Content:

  • Animation 1: How people end up admitted in the hospital
  • Animation 2: Who are all these people coming to see me? And what do they do?

FAQs:

Why am I waiting in the waiting room for so long?
Unfortunately, sometimes the ER can be very crowded, even if it doesn’t seem like it in the waiting room. We try to treat people as safely, quickly and efficiently as possible but sometimes there are emergencies that we have to attend to.

Why do I keep moving rooms?
Different parts of the hospital have different capabilities. These capabilities are related to the intensity of nursing care, various monitoring equipment and some rooms are used for special purposes (like isolating people with diseases that can be spread through the air)

Why was I told not to eat?
There are a few possibilities
Your current condition may get worse if you eat
We are worried that you can’t swallow properly
You will be undergoing a procedure soon and we don’t want you to vomit during the procedure

How do they not know when my procedure will be?
We try to stay on schedule for procedures but sometimes there are emergencies or sometimes procedures can take longer than expected.
