Getting Access to the Community Version of AllegroGraph - mdebellis/SemanticKG-Design GitHub Wiki
In order to have a full implementation of SPARQL and SHACL, you need another tool besides Protégé. Protégé is a tool to design OWL ontologies. The SPARQL and SHACL plugins are only provided for learning the concepts, not for serious work. Of the various tools, I've found AllegroGraph takes the least amount of time to get up to speed on. It doesn't have the flashiest user interface and it doesn't have things like an IDE for writing SPARQL. The Stardog and Graph DB user interfaces are aesthetically much nicer than the AllegroGraph Gruff SPARQL visualization tool. However, both those tools require some additional effort to configure the reasoner and get the full benefit of their environments. AllegroGraph is the only tool of the three where all you have to do is load your OWL file, run the reasoner, and start writing SPARQL queries. This is not an endorsement of AllegroGraph as the best of the Semantic Knowledge Graph triplestores. Selecting the best tool depends on your requirements. It is just that to run interesting SPARQL queries and visualize the results, AllegroGraph requires a bit less effort. It has a community version that is free and quite powerful. Stardog and OntoText (GraphDB) do as well. The easiest ways to get the AllegroGraph community version are:
- Create an account in the AllegroGraph cloud
- Download the Docker container with the latest community version of AllegroGraph
The first option is the easiest. You can be up and running in a couple of minutes. The only drawback is if you don't login to your community cloud account in approximately 24 hours you will start to get emails saying your cloud account is inactive and any graphs you created will be deleted after a few days of inactivity. To make sure this doesn't happen just login to the community cloud once in a while. Using the Docker container option is a bit more work but it means you won't get emails if your account is inactive. Both versions can be used indefinitely.
To log into the AllegroGraph cloud do the following:
Go to this link: AllegroGraph Downloads
Select the second option: AllegroGraph Cloud Login
That will take you to the login page for the AllegroGraph Cloud. Since you don't have an account select the Don't have an account? Sign up. option. Then create an account, login, and you are all set.
Then, go to exercise 2: Loading the People Ontology)
If you want to use the Docker version instead, it takes a bit more effort. The advantage is you won't get emails if your account is inactive. To use Docker, go to the following link and follow the directions: AllegroGraph for Docker
