A field is an element of meta-data within a NITF header, or Tagged Record Extension. Fields are not constructed by the user, they are children of the relevant header section. They have a physical width -- the one apportioned by the spec, and may be of type NITF_BCS_A, NITF_BCS_N, or NITF_BINARY.
