The New York City Department of City Planning defines Neighborhood Tabulation Areas as a type of statistical geography with more people than a census tract but fewer than a community district. The Department of City Planning combines census tracts within a community district tabulation area to form Neighborhood Tabulation Areas. NTAs nest within CDTAs.
For statisticians working with US Census Bureau American Community Survey data the sample size within census tracts is often too small for reliable statistical work. Neighborhood Tabulation Areas are intended to be a consistent, low-level geography with good statistical rigor.
Neighborhood Tabulation Areas are similar to, but not exactly the same as neighborhoods.
The characters at the Department of City Planning have come up with 6 character codes for 2020 Neighborhood Tabulation Areas. Fans of the 2010 Neighborhood Tabulation Area codes will notice that we have 2 more digits in 2020 than in 2010.
- 2 characters for borough
- 2 digits for community district
- 1 digit for "type"
- 1 digit creating a unique ID
For example, the Greenpoint Neighborhood Tabulation Area is BK0101.
You no doubt wish to know more about the "type" digit.
- 0 = residential
- 5 = Rikers
- 6 = other special areas
- 7 = cemetery
- 8 = airport
- 9 = park
