The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) maintains Fire Companies. Fire Companies nest within Fire-Battalions which nest within Fire-Divisions.

The FDNY identifies fire company units with a letter E, L, or Q, followed by a number.

• E 14 is Engine Company 14
• L 7 is Ladder Company 7
• Q 252 is Squad 252
