History shows that successful completion of large and complex software project is extremely challenging. Success in a software engineering context has many different meanings. Although, for example, a project may be completed within budget, but fails to fulfill the users' needs it is nonetheless marked as unsuccessful. As a project has proven unsuccessful, it always leads to either cancelling the project or an increase in budget.
