pfSense
pfSense is a freeware program that provides many helpful applications. It can be used to turn an old PC into a router and firewall. Coupling this with using the long-term memory as a a backup server can allow anyone to set up a robust home server network for the SOHO. The ability to install it on PCs, rather than just embedded devices make it a fantastic solution that can keep costs significantly lower than most any other option. It is also adaptable and scalable with a wide selection of optional extensions and uses. Some popular uses, according to TurboFuture.com include:
- LAN/WAN router
- Internet cafes
- Wireless hotspot (captive portal)
- VPN router
- Firewall
- DHCP/DNS server
- Wireless access point
- Transparent squid proxy server
- Multi wan router or load balancer
- DNS blacklist
- Port forwarding/NAT (network address translation)
These options make it much more versatile than a standard router, incorporating numerous features that could otherwise require multiple devices into a single package on one machine.
While being able to use it on a CP is one of the more appealing features for the home user, aesthetics could be more of a factor for businesses who host clients. For this concern, pfSense can also be installed on an embedded device, making it more functional and versatile than many other, more expensive options.
