Minutes
These are rough notes from the first “markup declaration” meeting.
Jean observes that a core differentiator compared with when we started many years ago with markup is that today most of the tools that we need to extend are open source or can be extended far more easily (e.g. browsers, tools support open formats).
Proposal: maintain two issues lists: core technologies and applications.
We should reach out to our technically-minded friends in academia and ensure that their students are allowed/encouraged to help address the issues raised in our lists as university projects.
Jean expresses eagerness to help with the two lists.
Something ready in time for Grace Hopper?
Bethan to be lead editor for Markup Declaration?
DeRose is working on a manifesto.
Reuse the story of planning for the replacement beams in New College?
Long term thinking!
INRIA project building an Alexandria library for open source code. Now a UNESCO project.
Long term preservation as a theme.
Steven to discuss funding sources within the Netherlands.
Not attempting to become a new standards org; there are existing places we can take specifications.
Call it a philosophy of markup; a home of markup.
The .rest domain is wide open.
Limit membership to individuals? Avoid large corporate influence?
Let’s not worry about problems we don’t have yet. We can change our minds.
Need to be have guidelines that are inclusive and limit bad actors. Also limit the influence of majority groups to impose their opinions on minority groups.
Avoid establishing a set of normative cultural rules.
Provide some way to build diversity into the charter.
Next steps:
- Funding sources.
- Start working on the two lists.
- Create a useful web presence at the website.
- Arrange a larger meeting this week.
- Call for populating lists: call for angle brackets!
