THE GREAT PORTABLE DEVICES !!

1. Abstract

For this project, we are going to state what really is a portable device as well as its characteristics, a couple examples with visual representation and also, we are going to establish a major problem around society which is they do not entirely know the difference between a portable device and a mobile device as well as, state how important are portable devices in our daily lives on contrast with the daily lives before the portable devices.

2. Introduction

The first thing to do should be establishing some definitions about the key words of our project. So, What is the meaning of portable? According to the Cambridge English Dictionary, "portable" is something light and little that can be easily moved around. But, what is the actual meaning of device? A "device" it usually is a machine that has been created for a purpose in concrete. Thus, a portable device should be something light and little that can be easily moved around that has been created for a purpose in concrete.

Now that we know exactly what a portable device we are going to give some visual examples of it:

  • Nintendo 3DS Nintendo 3DS

A gaming portable device created by Nintendo that almost everyone has had.

  • PS VitaPS Vita

Another gaming portable device this one created by Sony.

  • Macbook Macbook

A portable device that works like a desktop and a computer that let you work anywhere online and offline.

Now that we have given some examples about portable devices, it might be a good idea that we state a worldwide problem or concussion with portable devices. The problem is the following one: what is it actually the difference between a portable device and a mobile device?

3. Methodology

Before getting started with our problem statement, it should clear what we all know about what a mobile device is right? 🤷‍♂️

Basically, a mobile device is somewhat seem to be the same thing as a portable device; something light and little that can be easily moved around that has been created for a purpose in concrete.

So what is it actually the difference between those two?

According to an article written by Catherine Roseberry, the distinction is not focused on its easily maneuver but, it's connectivity.

Wireless Hotspot

For example, an external hard drive (picture in the left) is considered a portable device while a wireless hotspot (picture in the right) is considered a mobile device. In addition to this, it should be remarked that another great difference between mobile devices and portable devices is that mobile devices are easier to use than portable devices while moving, doing exercise, and walking as mobile devices are usually lighter than portable devices.

Now that we know the difference, we should all ask ourselves 🤔: Why is it important that we have portable devices nowadays? What these devices added to our lives?

3.1 / Life before portable devices:

Before portable devices where around our daily lives, most of people where living normal lives but in a different way; when people used to travel instead of using a GPS (Global Positioning System) they were using maps so they could not get lost. Also, if people wanted to talk to someone that were not around them, they had to go to a telephone cabin and pay for a call instead of nowadays, having a cellphone and call them for "free".

3.2 / Life after portable devices:

In our current days, we are surrounded by portable devices where people can easily do a lot of things anywhere like for example, working on the street on a project, chatting with people, calculating how much is the change of currency, traveling without getting lost with a GPS, ... And all thanks to these devices. Howbeit, despite there are a lot of positive things about it, there are also negative effects on portable devices. People now do not pay attention to the outside world, they are all just obsessed with portable devices that they forgot to experience what life really is; observe, experience and learn with your own eyes, mind, and soul. In addition to this, people are now worse at socializing with people due to these devices as those techniques we stated before are starting to lack off between young people.

4. Results

After reaching to this point, now we should know what a portable device really is (something light and little that can be easily moved around that has been created for a purpose in concrete) that can be easily misunderstood by a mobile device as they share a lot of characteristics but which differences are its connectivity and that mobile devices are usually lighter than portable devices as well as more handy than portable devices while moving, doing exercise, or walking. Also, we have seen in a nutshell how different life was before and after portable devices thanks to visual content and supported arguments with cons and pros of each type of lives.

5. Conclusion

Again, we all now know what a portable device really is, how can it be easily misunderstood by a mobile device and also, we have seen in a nutshell how different life was before and after portable devices. Now we sure know that portable devices are a great creation made by humans that has its pros and cons but that made people lives easier than before.

6. Future Work

From now on, what could be the future of portable devices? 🤔🤷‍♂️

A couple ideas that can come to our minds could be that instead of having portable devices, we could investigate on devices that can be installed in our own body that works the same or better than portable devices in a more efficient way. Another idea could be that we still have portable devices but with the-state-of-the-art power, energy and efficiency to the point where non-portable devices are totally replaced by portable devices.
