Goals and Vision, Winter 2024 - magma/magma GitHub Wiki

What is the vision? Why do we exist? Not only tech but also big picture.

The Compelling Story for 2024

What is the big reason(s) we are communicating out? Why would people listen? Who are the target "people"? What evidence do we have for our story?

How does our story relate to our vision? Is our story a stepping stone enroute to our vision? Does it represent a shift in course from our earlier vision?

How does our story relate to what's going on outside our community? In industry, research, user needs, other projects, etc.?

Founding Vision

What is the legacy vision, at founding and later?

From the founding paper (Hasan, S., Padmanabhan, A., Davie, B., Rexford, J., Kozat, U., Gatewood, H., ... & Tomar, A. (2023). Building Flexible,{Low-Cost} Wireless Access Networks With Magma. In 20th USENIX Symposium on Networked Systems Design and Implementation (NSDI 23) (pp. 1667-1681).):

  • Market innovation: for low-cost wireless access where operator economics are difficult due to issues such as low population density or income levels
  • Technical innovation: leverage Internet design patterns, terminating access network-specific protocols at the edge and abstracting the ac- cess network from the core architecture
  • Development innovation: open source community, radically flexible system architecture

How is this different?

What is unique about Magma?

Market and use cases

Markets

Who do we aim to serve? Be as specific as possible.

Whose needs are top of mind? Personas.

Competitors

What are our target markets currently using?

User Personas (of the opensource version)

These are not (yet) personas but give a flavor of who we see as users.

  • Telecom System Integrator
  • Academic Researcher
  • Use Case Specific Private Network Integrator (e.g., a Manufacturing IoT technology company building 5G integration into their factory robots)
  • Digital Divide Non-Profit Solution Provider

We could do a survey of the community members (esp. those who identify as users) to find out why they're using it.

Downstream Personas (of a hardened solution built on the opensource version)

  • Community leader in rural Africa seeking to provider internet access to their community
  • Small MVNO
  • ...

Where are we?

Major Accomplishments in 2023: what have we done in the last year that shows we're on track?

1.9: how does this fit the big picture? Why are these the items we chose to work on?

Proposed new Vision and Mission statements for 2024

Vision Statement

Empowering Connectivity, Transforming Networks: Envisioning a Future where Seamless Mobile Communication is Accessible to All.

In a world where every mobile network seeks a high-performance packet core at its core, Magma Core pioneers a transformative vision. We recognize the challenges faced by Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), Internet Service Providers (ISPs), Multiple System Operators (MSOs), Enterprises and R&D Community in acquiring, deploying, and sustaining cutting-edge technologies within budget constraints.

Our vision is to democratize advanced packet core technology, making it accessible at a significantly lower total cost of ownership. By championing the democratization of network access, we aim to empower smaller entities and entrepreneurs by addressing the vendor lockdowns and creating a level playing field for all stakeholders. We strive to ensure that advanced network capabilities are not confined to a privileged few but are accessible to every player in the ecosystem. Together, let us build a future where superior network performance is not a luxury but a universal standard.

Mission Statement

At Magma Community, we are dedicated to transforming the landscape of mobile communication through our open-source software platform. Magma provides network operators with an open, RAN agnostic, flexible, and extendable mobile core network solution. Our mission is clear: connect the world to a faster network by empowering service providers to construct cost-effective and extensible carrier-grade networks.

Driven by a commitment to openness and innovation, Magma Community strives to democratize access to advanced packet core technology. We believe in fostering a collaborative ecosystem where operators, developers, and organizations of all sizes can contribute and benefit. Our mission extends beyond providing a solution; it is about creating a community-driven movement to redefine industry standards and make superior network performance accessible to all.

With Magma Community, we aim to revolutionize network infrastructure, ensuring that the advantages of a faster, more efficient network are within reach for every participant in our connected world. Together, let us build a future where connectivity is not just a service but a shared endeavor, accelerating the pace of global communication.

Working Group

outreach committee

This involves organizing events, webinars, and conferences to share insights, foster dialogue, and address industry challenges. By fostering an open and collaborative environment, the outreach committee aims to build a strong network that not only promotes Magmacore's innovations but also contributes to the overall growth and development of the 5G landscape (and beyond). Some outreach ideas may include:

  • monthly Newsletter
  • Attend conference (as Attendee and Speaker)
  • Live sessions
  • create demo days
  • create live office support hours (Be able to enter room where you can connect with one of our supporter

Outreach Sub-Projects:

Starterkit

This Magma Starter Kit is designed to facilitate the deployment of Magma in your network. It provides: a basic bill of materials that is required to deploy Magma; a set of instructions on how to obtain, deploy, and configure Magma software components; and a section dedicated to answering some common questions including how to obtain support from the community
