Setup Guide - madesjardins/AiWarmachine GitHub Wiki

Beside a computer, there are 3 things you need for AiWarmachine:

  • Table with well measured borders and 90° angles.
  • Webcam mounted on the ceiling.
  • Projector mounted on the ceiling.

This is my very imperfect setup. At each step, try to make it as perfect as possible, but don't get sick over it, it's going to be just fine.

I'm using a simple working desk, a Logitech Brio 4K Pro Webcam and a Wimius P61 mini projector. So far, I'm fine with this gear.

Table

Not much to say about the table itself, as long as the size is good, it's sturdy, seems straight and leveled, it should be good. The tricky part is creating an actual rectangular play area that has 90° angles and parallel edges of same lengths. A good ruler, a carpenter square, a level and a bit of patience will do the trick. Paint points for corners, big enough for the camera to pick it and not struggle to much trying to find them during calibration. My play area is about 36"x24", but you need to measure as precisely as possible for calibration. I glued a ReadyGrass vinyl mat straight on my desk because I like how it feels, but I'm sure any gaming mats heavy enough that it doesn't have waves and not slide when moving models or roll dice should do the job.

Webcam

My Logitech Brio 4K Pro Webcam works great, I have a lot of control over it, I can output images without much noise, it does 4K, but it also work in HD. My guess is: if you already have a good HD webcam like a Logitech C920, you should try it before buying something more expensive. You just need to select "MJPG" for the "FourCC" camera setting instead of "YUY2", at least that's what I have to do with mine. You'll need a long USB cable, like 10' maybe depending on where your computer/laptop is. As for the ceiling mount, I pretty much created and printed an inverted adjustable tripod, but it's not very good. It's nice to have a mount that allows you to translate and rotate in all axis, but if you measure well and test beforehand, you might not need all that. I'm not sharing my rig, cause it's not good and you shouldn't use that. I put my camera to the left of projector, but maybe I should have put it in front instead, I don't know. It's not casting shadows at least, but it's definitely not in the center. Having said that, it's leveled and it does the job, so I'm sure you can come up with something that work as great or better.

Projector

Now for the projector, the first thing I was concerned about was the price. I did not want to pay more than 150$(USD). I looked at some reviews for cheap projectors, this one seemed ok and I'm quite satisfied, no issues at all. It's not full HD, it's 720p but you can feed it 1080p and for what we're doing here, it's seems sufficient. The fan is a bit noisy, but I use AiWarmachine with headphones, so I don't really care. What you have to be careful about when looking for projectors is how bright it is and how far you have to be above your table to cover all your play area. I was able to find this information in the user manual and my ceiling is just high enough for it to work. As for the ceiling mount, the idea wasn't that bad, but I should have tested it more before fixing the base of the mount to the ceiling. It allowed me to adjust the projector nicely and it's leveled, so in the end, that mount was ok. I did it quite quickly and it's far from perfect, but if you want, the STLs are available in the shared Google drive. As for the HDMI, it's also 10' with a 90° connector (because it's so close to the ceiling).
