Power Over Ethernet - madBeavis/PimpMyAtv GitHub Wiki

Another method to power devices would be to use power over ethernet (POE) switch. The setup consists of a POE switch, compatible cables and active splitters. Compared to the relay setup, this method has the potential to cost more, but is less of the DIY aspect compared to a relay setup.

You can setup RebootMadDevice or RebootPoEDevice to power cycle devices when they lose their shit. I run the old standalone RMD, as it was running and I have relays in the mix also. For a new POE setup, I would look at RPD.

For my 3rd build, I went with the recommendation of folks on Discord and went with an used SF300-48PP 48-Port 10/100 PoE+ Managed Switch that I got off ebay for $67 shipped. Powered it up, it worked great. FYI, the default login credentials are "cisco"/"cisco". You will have to source a reasonably priced one, but if you go with the one I purchased, the research has been done in respect to integrating it with MAD and RMD.

For splitters, you have to use the active variety. I got some from Amazon, as I didn't want to wait a long time to get parts from China via AliWhatever. Do note that the 12v are cheaper than 5v versions. Also verify you get the proper sized barrel connector to fit your atv or procure some adapters.

For cables, I got some from where else but Amazon. Although probably not necessary, I used Cat8 cables due to larger guage wire compared to lower specification cables.

As with anything, do your research and verify parts are fit for purpose.

My third build is a POE build.
