The dead, the recently deceased, a soul to be transported from the realm of the living to The Great Beyond. Not all Dead are considered Departed; in fact, most aren’t. What makes The Departed special is that their souls are innocent, and they have no further attachments to the mortal realm. As such, they are free to cross over to The Great Beyond. Unlike other Dead, the Departed retain their memories of their mortal lives, although it often takes them some time to come to terms with their death.

Because The Departed are untainted, they are desirable to Lost Souls of all kinds (Fargone, Reapers, and Psychopomps, who would steal their souls if given the chance. Like Lost Souls, The Departed are distinct from Ghosts in that they are unable visit or affect the mortal realm. Unlike Lost Souls, however, Departed are not bound to The Crossroads, but to The Great Beyond.
