Psychopomps - lys8399/psychopomp GitHub Wiki
By definition, psychopomps are creatures, spirits, angels, or deities in many religions whose responsibility is to escort newly deceased souls from Earth to the afterlife. Their role is simply to provide safe passage, to conduct spirits or souls to the other world.
In our game, a psychopomp is a form some people take on after death. The Player Character, for example, is a Psychopomp. The Psychopomp is forced to take on his role of servitude, conveying the dead into the afterlife, because their souls are tainted by sin. In order to atone for the guilt, they must complete their duties as Psychopomp, until their sins can be absolved. After this, they may transcend their role as Psychopomp and eventually become Departed.
Many Psychopomps, already twisted and tainted in the soul, are incredibly jealous of The Departed, and seek to steal their souls in order to restore their own, rather than completing their duties. However, this often causes their souls to become more tainted than before; as their souls become increasingly tainted, they lose their humanity, begin to forget their mortal lives, and become Fargone.
While Psychopomps, like Ghosts, are distinct from The Departed, in that they are unable to cross over, and in that they are considered Lost Souls, only Ghosts are able to visit the mortal realm. Their influence is restricted to The Crossroads.
