Notes on Life Itself presentation 2024-02-29

First, it was great to see the theory-practice-theory idea well... taken from theory to practice? I think it went really well, and could easily be iterated on and improved with a bit more linking (that couldn't be done under the time constraints).

Here's a few things that I thought might be changed or added:

  • Some kind of icebreaker. I'm pretty open and I still found it very hard to open up to a complete stranger like I did. This in turn led her to switch her story
  • I liked the introduction, but in a way it might make sense to make it very simple/black and white concepts (e.g. reason and intuition), and then have those concepts feed directly into the top option of the tensions. (I now totally get why you went into more depth in Neither/Nor)
  • I did not know how to screenshot the value tensions
  • I also didn't know if I was supposed to somehow be filling it out on a screen or copying it down on paper or what. I ended up copying it down on paper, but it's probably worth explaining a bit more the intended method (maybe it's easy on iOS or something? but it's not on any platform I use)
  • Maybe a value tensions typeform could make sense if you're expecting it to be digital? or else say people need paper beforehand.
  • Driving thing, maybe ask for buy-in after clearly explaining what the exercise is before pulling people in. Make it clear that this exercise requires focus and shouldn't be done on the go (but maybe I was just unlucky)
  • Both of us had issues picking a transition point (and she changed hers halfway through). I think this was because we weren't clear who we were sharing with or why. I'd suggest giving an example of the kind of turning point you mean, and then asking if people have one in mind (and maybe leaving time to ask questions?) before proceeding
  • For the writing, the hardest question came first, and I assumed the next 6 questions would be just as hard, so I spent too little time on the first one and I don't think it was possible to go back? Or at least I couldn't figure it out
  • You could put a timer on your shared screen could be good for people knowing how much time they have.
