Project Definition Questions

1. Why does this project need to exist?

Restaurant websites are some of the most frequently utilized websites on the internet, yet they are known for being the worst websites out there. This is an area that is in need of educated designers who can fix this problem. Therefore we need to be educated so we are the ones who can land those jobs, and help create a great first impression and experience of a restaurant before people even get there.

2. What aspects of this project are good user experiences?

This project encompasses all aspects of user experience. From researching what a good restaurant website user experience is and figuring out what people want when they are visiting a restaurant website, to creating a great first impression of a restaurant, this project allows us to problem solve a good user experience throughout every step.

3. What aspects of this project are bad user experiences?

The original Sushi Maru website is inactive, which is in itself a bad user experience. We also must research what a bad restaurant user experience is in order to learn what not to do. For example, making the menu a downloadable PDF, having a busy, cluttered site, or having unimportant information have more hierarchy than important information.

4. Describe the user(s) of, and also how they are using -- this project?

The target audience is probably females ages 18-35. The users are mostly going to be searching the Sushi Maru site from their mobile device. They will either be trying to decide which restaurant to go to, viewing the menu, making a reservation, or finding hours of operations or directions.

5. What solutions may exist to improve the overall User Experience (UX)? Reference

Solutions to creating a good user experience include:

  • Having a well organized, easy to navigate/read website
  • easy access to the menu
  • Specials/happy hour info
  • Restaurant address with a link to google maps
  • Online reservation system that actually works
  • Hours of operation
  • Parking and contact info
  • Beat Google and Yelp
  • Subtle textures, crisp typography
  • Create a great mobile experience
