Description:

there have been a couple of case where users were running without direct rendering (different reasons, ssh'ing into another machine being one of the most common).

it would be good if it was immediately obvious that a user was running without direct rendering (maybe a tk window popup at init that explains to them that they are running without direct rendering). I'm thinking a warning printout on the command line might not be sufficient for certain users.
