New Player Resources - long-war-2/lwotc GitHub Wiki
The information below was based on vanilla XCOM2 WotC and Long War 2. It is still mostly applicable but just be aware that some data may have changed. The release of LWotC to the Steam Workshop means that new information will be coming forward and players should feel free to update this wiki as needed. The LWotC Ufopaedia should have the latest updated information
XCOM 2, WotC, and LWotC Folder Paths
-
Steam\steamapps\common\XCOM 2\XCom2-WarOfTheChosen\XComGame - this is the Default game folder, unless you know what you are doing don't touch this.
-
My Documents\My Games\XCOM2 War of the Chosen\XComGame - this is the folder where XCOM 2 pulls all of its configuration to run the game, it also saves your configuration profile, savegame data, photobooth, and character pools. Mods make changes to these files through ini file edits located in their own config folders.
-
SteamApps\workshop\content\268500\2683996590 - All files for LWOTC reside in this folder, including config ini files
Launch Arguments
These are some useful modifications to the launch parameters of XCOM2:
- -allowconsole - allows the use of console commands
- -log - generates the launch log in a pop up window if you want to monitor the game's progress in a separate window.
- -autodebug - seems to help reduce crashes in some cases, not 100% what it actually does in this instance
- -nostartupmovies - no start up movies
- -noRedScreens - stops the game from throwing Red Screen errors (these are errors that do not necessarily break the game, and can mostly be ignored by the player. They are really for mod authors and testers.
- -review - switches off the debug shell screen and present the player with the final shell screen by default.
- -regenrateinis - Don't use this setting it breaks everything when used incorrectly. If you need to regenerate your ini files just delete the *My Documents\My Games\XCOM2 War of the Chosen\XComGame\config" folder.

Alternative Mod Launcher
Since early 2021 and the Steam update that seems to have broken the game's default 2K launcher the AML is essential for playing modded XCOM2, there is really no reason not to use it.
Their discord is located here. The key to using the AML is to understand the file folder paths where everything XCOM2 related lives on your computer. 99% of all problems can be traced back to incorrect file paths.
These are the two most basic paths to include:
-
SteamApps\workshop\content\268500
-
Steam\steamapps\common\XCOM 2\XCom2-WarOfTheChosen\XComGame
Some AML Tips
-
Check the "unhide mods" option if you are missing mods from your list
-
You can create separate AML profiles based on how/what you are playing, i.e. a basic LWotC profile, a heavily modded LWotC profile, a vanilla XCOM WotC profile, etc..
-
Create a profile with just LWotC, the included Beta Highlander, and the required mods, then load it whenever you are instructed to launch the mod with only required mods installed.
-
Verify that you have the Community Highlander enabled, and if you have Alien Hunters that you have that highlander enabled as well.
-
You can easily modify the config files for any mod within AML using the built in text editor.
-
Large mods like LwotC can take a little while to download so AML may appear frozen while it verifies and downloads your mod list. You can open aml.log and check the progress of the download and configuration if you are worried that it has crashed.

Winmerge PROTIP: Use this to compare two INI files. So you can save your edits to an existing INI file and when you update just open the new IN I file and your old file to compare the changes. This is also great to see what changed after an LWotC update.
