Introduction

  • This board game came about from our participation in the NASA Space Apps Challenge 2021 - Space Quest: The Game. We, the Penguins of Callisto, have set out to prove to you that board games are a great format for teaching, while having fun. Your goal as a player of this game is to increase public interest in space science by performing outreach and completing missions. These tasks will improve the reputation of your corporation, which is how you win the game.

How to Play

  • General Overview Gameplay flows from Earth Phase (4 Actions), to Space Phase (1 Event, if there are any rockets in Space), to Destination Phase (4 Actions).
  1. Earth Phase
  • -List of Earth Actions without details, reference future section-
  • Go to a location to perform an associated action. Some actions have no locations and can be performed while anywhere on Earth (-list-).
  • When you arrive at Mission HQ, Research Center, Media and Communications, or Engineering, roll a die and take the indicated number of cubes from that space. When you gain research cubes, you may go through the Research cards and select the ones indicated on your Mission card(s). -[edit this]-
  • Missions are prepared for Launch at Engineering. After Earth Actions are completed, all rockets on the Launch Pad get launched into the Space area and Space Phase begins.
  1. Space Phase
  • -All details about Space Events here. Space events can be positive or negative.-
  • If there are any rockets in the Space area, Space Phase is triggered. Space Phase consists of drawing and resolving a Space Event card. Space Event cards can have positive or negative effects for the players who have a rocket in the Space area. -[what if multiple rockets of one color? repeat effect?]-
  1. Destination phase
  • -List of Destination Actions without details, reference future section-
  • Space Station

Earth Phase Actions - See Earth wiki page for more details

Mission Headquarters

  • Get mission card. Roll Mission Die for how many you see, choose 1.

Research Center

  • When taking research cube, take card associated with research item/ability needed on mission card.

Media and Communications

  • When arrive, get card (see 3, choose 1)
  • Contribute to Emergency PR

Engineering

  • Launch: Place Ship figure and Pairing token on Launch Pad. The matching Pairing token is placed on the Mission card you are preparing to launch. Place the resources indicated onto the Mission card. You may send a mission without placing all indicated resources on the card, but you cannot complete that mission until all resources have been supplied. (See Destination Phase for supplying a mission after launch).

Other

  1. Splash Pad
  • Clean up Landing:
  1. Media cards -[limit to how many can play]-

Destination Phase Actions

Game End

The game ends when one of three things occurs:

  1. Running through the Space Events deck
  • When the last Space Event card is played, no more rockets can be launched into Space. Players resolve Destination Actions, and the game is over. The player whose corporation has the highest reputation wins.
  1. Reaching the end of the reputation track
  • If any player reaches the end of the reputation track, and the Public Relations Track is in the Green, the game ends immediately, and that player wins. If the Public Relations Track is in the Red, Emergency PR must be completed before that player wins. >* If multiple players are at the end of the Reputation Track, while the Public Relations Track is in the Green, the winning player is the one who has the most completed Mission cards. If there is still a tie, the winner is the player from the previous tie who has the most completed Media cards. If a tie persists, the corporations of the remaining tied players become sworn public enemies, and the game ends.
  1. End of the Public Relations Track.
  • If the marker on the Public Relations Track ever reaches the last space in the Bad section, the game is over and all players lose. The public has lost all faith in space exploration and refuses to fund any more missions.
