Fall Detector Documentation

Background

Nowadays, Fall-related injury of older people is becoming a serious social problem. In 2011–2012, more than 96,000 people aged 65 and over were injured for a fall-related, three and a half times as many cases as 45–64 year old.This problem is happening all over the world, individuals with high ages would get injuries and other related health issues by a fall. The phenomenon not only threatens the health of the old, but also puts so much pressure on emergency room visits. In Australia, fall-related hospitalization is particularly common among elder citizens.

Introduction

It is a common phenomenon that elder men and women may fall and lose conscious, if there were no pedestrian, they could not ask for help and lead themselves to more dangerous situations. To help reduce the fall-related injured of this problem, we are investigating how to help older people get rescue on time and avoid deeper damage. Smart phone APP is one of the easiest way for older people to seek rescue, it does not has many limitations, and people could use it whenever possible. From the research, nearly 65% of older people use smart phones when they meet some emergency. Therefore, we decide to use Android platform to build our project. Considering one of the reasons older people may cannot use the smart phone when they suffered some physical injured, or in some situations, they do not know how to contact with the nearest effective rescue. Therefore, we developed an Android application which could help the older people to get rescue on time. We also tried to think and design some intelligent and user-friendly features. In this project, our solution is a combination of some of the different functions smart phone application. We use the sensors which was embedded in smart phone to detect falls, and send the message automatically to designated user to make them know the problem and get rescue.
