RM is recognized as the main English speaker in BTS because he had independently studied the language prior to training. He cites the American sitcom Friends as his source of instruction; he first watched the episodes with Korean subtitles then with English, and finally without them. RM acts as the interpreter during interviews and often answers questions on behalf of the other members.

RM is also a rapper of the group; his former stage name Rap Monster explains this quite well. However, he does occasionally sing and has the vocal range A2-G4.
